About us

EnerHy is the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) focused on achieving Net Zero by making green hydrogen and wind energy more affordable, scalable, and sustainable.

We bring together leading research groups at Loughborough University, Cranfield University, and the University of Strathclyde, and over 60 industry and civic partners.

We will welcome up to 80 funded doctoral researchers between 2024 and 2028.

What is a CDT?

A Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), funded by the EPSRC (UK Research and Innovation), offers a distinctive cohort-based approach to doctoral education. Students pursue their own research projects while benefiting from a collaborative environment, shared learning experiences, and exposure to a wide network of industry partners. CDTs combine academic excellence with real-world relevance, equipping researchers with the skills, insights, and connections needed to tackle major societal challenges – like achieving Net Zero.

Why hydrogen?

Hydrogen can help ensure energy security and speed up the journey to Net Zero. However, we need to produce more hydrogen from renewable sources.

To grow hydrogen technology quickly for Net Zero, we face several challenges:

  • Making hydrogen production cost-effective
  • Developing efficient supply chains and managing waste
  • Scaling up production to meet demand
  • Innovating and implementing new technologies
  • Gaining public support and acceptance

Why wind?

Wind Energy is key to producing green hydrogen, ensuring energy security and speeding up the journey to Net Zero. However, we need to make wind energy more efficient, cost effective and easier to scale.

To grow wind energy and reduce cost, we face several challenges:

  • Floating turbines and deep water deployment
  • Grid integration
  • Operations and maintenance (O&M)
  • Turbine design and control
  • Supply chain
  • Skills and workforce

EnerHy’s approach

Building on excellent hydrogen and wind energy research at three leading universities, with our extensive network of partners, we aim to:

  • Expand our research efforts rapidly
  • Train the next generation of hydrogen and wind energy experts, including innovators, researchers, and industry specialists

Leading independent industry, civic and academic experts ensure EnerHy’s vision and direction of the CDT are on target.

The EnerHy CDT leadership team consists of experienced individuals across the three institutions. Between them, they have managed projects worth over £20 million.
