PhD researcher Conn represents EnerHy at Westminster for hydrogen report launch

Researcher Conn Murnin recently represented EnerHy at Westminster for the launch of the Hydrogen State of the Nation report, developed by the Hydrogen Energy Association (HEA). The event, held at Portcullis House, brought together leaders from industry, academia, and government to discuss the UK’s emerging hydrogen landscape and future investment priorities.

The launch featured a keynote address from Michael Shanks MP, Minister for Energy, who highlighted the rapid progress of the sector.
He said: “Hydrogen is no longer a theoretical concept. We’re starting to see real projects delivering on the ground – and that’s how we build momentum.”

Conn also had the opportunity to speak directly with the Minister about the distinct roles various hydrogen production pathways will play over the next decade – supporting skills, jobs, and climate goals – while recognising that further policy clarity is needed to unlock hydrogen’s full potential. Priority areas discussed included the need for a thorough infrastructure strategy, stronger industrial cooperation, and clear links to net‑zero targets.

The event was hosted by the HEA under the leadership of Dr Emma Guthrie, CEO, who emphasised the importance of evidence‑based policy and cross‑sector collaboration in accelerating the UK’s hydrogen transition.

Reflecting on the day, Conn said:
“It was inspiring to see such strong cross‑sector momentum behind hydrogen. The conversations made clear both the opportunities ahead and the collaborative effort needed to realise them.”

Conn joined EnerHy’s second researcher cohort in October 2025 and his research will focus on next‑generation offshore wind technology, specifically the EU‑funded 3‑bladed X‑Rotor concept, which aims to enable tighter turbine spacing and increase energy density in future offshore wind farms. His work uses aerodynamic analysis and CFD modelling to assess the potential of this novel hybrid turbine design to significantly reduce the Levelised Cost of Energy.

Congratulations to Conn on representing EnerHy at such an important event for the future of the UK’s energy system.
