We continue our Cohort 1 film series with Engineering Hydrogen Net Zero CDT researcher Ilyani Suhaimin, who is investigating how tidal energy can be harnessed in low-flow ocean environments.
Most tidal energy technologies are designed for fast, powerful currents – but in regions like Malaysia, slower tides present a unique challenge.
Working in collaboration with PETRONAS, Ilyani’s research focuses on designing turbine blades that perform efficiently in low-velocity tidal conditions. Her work explores blade geometry, structural integrity, and material selection, drawing inspiration from wind energy innovations to adapt turbines for gentler ocean flows.
This research is crucial for expanding the reach of tidal energy to previously overlooked regions, helping clean energy developers tap into predictable ocean power and accelerate the global transition to net zero.
