The goal of this project is to find new ways to balance hydrogen supply and demand, make transportation more efficient, and lower costs and CO2 emissions.
- Research area: Systems and components
- Institution: Loughborough University
- Supervisor: Professor Lisa Jackson
- PhD student: Jacob Boden
- Conducted in collaboration with BOC
Project summary
With the shift to alternative fuels, there’s a growing demand for hydrogen. Current production and supply strategies need adaptation. This project will work with BOC’s Remote Operating Centre to optimize hydrogen plants, distribution, and supply chains.
It will consider constraints like production rates, efficiency, maintenance schedules, driver availability, and customer needs. Delivery schedules are dynamic, creating complex optimisation problems.
The research aims to:
- Identify complexities in optimising hydrogen production and supply.
- Develop multi-objective optimization models.
- Analyse the impact on business service levels and predict future supply and demand.
Meet the researcher

Hi, I’m Jacob and I am a PhD student at Loughborough University.
As a recent Physics Master’s graduate from Loughborough, I bring a strong foundation in theoretical and experimental physics, along with hands-on experience in data analysis, programming, and scientific research.
I’m excited to be working with BOC to tackle real-world challenges in hydrogen supply. My research uses advanced optimisation models and live industry data to make hydrogen production and delivery more efficient, reliable, and sustainable.
It’s rewarding to contribute to solutions that could shape the future of clean energy and support the UK’s transition to Net Zero.
