EnerHy researchers to share lessons from Malawi battery-electrolyser deployment

Cohort 1 researcher Soustain Chigalu will be speaking at the upcoming webinar, Deploying Battery Electrolyser Technology for Green Hydrogen Production and Clean Cooking in Malawi, on 22 October 2026.

Soustain’s EnerHy doctoral research, undertaken in partnership with Malawian renewable energy specialists INFLO Ltd, focuses on using battery-electrolyser technology to help address energy poverty in Malawi. Alongside the technical work, he engages with local communities to understand their views of the technology and what could support its wider adoption.

The webinar will explore the deployment of the world’s first battery-electrolyser system at Mwanza District Hospital in Malawi. The system produces hydrogen for cooking in a kitchen used by patients’ guardians, while also supplying electricity to the kitchen and the maternity and under-five wards.

Soustain will be joined by Professor Dani Strickland, Director of EnerHy and Team Leader of the battery-electrolyser research programme. They will discuss the practical challenges and lessons from taking the technology from laboratory research into operation, as well as opportunities for wider deployment across Africa.

The session will be facilitated by Damien Frame from the University of Strathclyde, Senior Member of the Energy for Development team within the Institute for Energy and Environment at the University of Strathclyde.

The webinar is organised by the Southern African Battery Energy Storage System Centre of Excellence (SABESS CoE) in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde and the Global Renewables Centre (GRC).
