Predicting failure in HVDC interconnections for offshore wind farms

Cohort 3

Join an exciting PhD project with Siemens Energy in electrical engineering and data science to design predictive failure analysis for high‑voltage direct current (HVDC) systems, reducing downtime across key assets and auxiliary equipment. An outstanding opportunity to develop diagnostic models, work with real condition‑monitoring data, and enhance the reliability and resilience of future HVDC networks.

  • Institution: Strathclyde University
  • Primary supervisor: Professor James Carroll
  • In partnership with Siemens Energy
  • Subject requirements: First-class or upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, Physics, Data Analytics or other relevant areas
  • Duration of award: 4 years (full-time) up to 8 years (part-time)
  • October 2026 start

Project summary

This role offers an exceptional opportunity for a motivated researcher to contribute to cutting edge work at the intersection of high voltage engineering, data science, and offshore energy systems.

You will be responsible for conducting research into predictive failure analysis methodologies for HVDC interconnection systems. This will include assessments of primary components such as switchgear and power transformers, as well as essential auxiliary systems that are integral to the operation and safety of offshore platforms. Working within a multidisciplinary environment, you will develop advanced diagnostic models, analyse complex condition monitoring data, and help shape innovative solutions that enhance the reliability, resilience, and long term performance of next generation HVDC networks.

Collaboration

Siemens Energy, the industry partner for this PhD, will be closely involved in the project, provide an industry supervisor, and host time at their sites.

You will also receive specialist training through the Engineering Hydrogen Net Zero CDT which offers a unique blend of cutting-edge research, cohort-based collaboration, and industry exposure – equipping you to become a future leader.

Fees and funding

The studentship is for 4 years full-time, is fully funded with tuition fees at the UK rate covered and provides a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per annum. Additionally, £3,000 per annum is provided for consumables, travel, etc. Due to UKRI funding rules, this studentship is only available to those eligible for UK fees.
