Developing a model to aid a large-scale operational site transition to sustainable energy

Cohort 1

The goal of this project is to develop a model to facilitate the transition of a large-scale operational site to sustainable energy sources, ensuring it meets its annual energy demand patterns.

  • Research area: Systems and components
  • Institution: Loughborough University
  • Supervisors: Dr Thomas Steffen, Dr Ashley Fly
  • PhD student: Trevor Smith

Project summary

This project focuses on how to transition a large-scale operational site to sustainable energy sources while also meeting its energy demand pattern throughout a yearly time cycle. Solar, wind, heat pumps, batteries, electrolysers, and hydrogen fuel cells will be considered, focusing on adoption through smart micro-grids and hydrogen storage for distribution and seasonal variation. The research will use UK industrial energy usage data.

Assessing commercial energy products, site-wide energy management systems (EMS) software, and energy storage options will determine the pathway and readiness for sustainable energy use.

Meet the researcher

Trevor Smith

Hi, I’m Trevor and I am an engineering research student at Loughborough University.

Most of my industrial experience has been within the Food manufacturing sector, however, involvement with domestic SMART metering made me aware of the challenges facing the Energy sector, particularly around the adoption of sustainable energy sources and meeting demand side response on the energy networks.

The support of my supervisors, as well as the relationships being developed across the EnerHy CDT with Strathclyde University and Cranfield University will become invaluable to both my personal development and the success of my research.
