The goal of this project is to adapt the UK’s electricity market to promote efficiency, renewable energy investment, and system reliability, while supporting the transition to Net Zero.
- Research area: Renewable energy
- Institution: University of Strathclyde
- Supervisor:
- PhD student: Elizabeth Pollard
- Conducted in collaboration with Ocean Winds
Project summary
The UK electricity sector is evolving to support a sustainable future, and market design is crucial. This project will explore how to adapt market arrangements to promote economic efficiency, encourage renewable energy investment, and ensure system reliability and affordability.
The research aims to:
- Analyse the current market: Evaluate the efficiency of the UK’s electricity market structure and mechanisms.
- Investigate renewable integration: Assess the impact of renewable energy, energy storage, demand-side participation, and emerging technologies on market design.
- Assess policy and regulation: Evaluate current policies and regulations and provide recommendations for improvements.
Meet the researcher

Hi, I’m Elizabeth. I previously completed an integrated master’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Strathclyde, where I developed an interest in renewable energy and sustainable technologies, including the Hydrogen economy. I then spent over a year working as a junior electrochemist, working on catalysts for PEM water electrolysers and Hydrogen fuel cells.
My project is focused on the integration of renewable energy sources in the UK energy markets. The project aims to investigate what market approach and policies could aid in making the market greener, while maintaining low cost and reliability.
My sponsor is Ocean Winds, a joint venture of EDP Renewables and ENGIE, combining both companies’ offshore wind assets and projects.
So far on the CDT programme, I have learnt a lot about interesting topics, such as safety, hydrogen technology and wind turbine technologies.
