Our very first published paper “Designing and Integrating a Battery-Electrolyser Energy System for Communities in Sub-Saharan Africa” was presented at the International Conference on Smart Grid in Glasgow, where it also received the “First Best Paper Award”.

First named author, Soustain Chigalu, is part of EnerHy’s first cohort and his research project is “Barriers and opportunities for deploying battery-electrolysers in sub-Saharan Africa”.
He is part of an international partnership exploring how battery-electrolyser systems can help meet electricity and clean cooking needs in rural Africa by integrating solar, battery and hydrogen technologies.
Professor Dani Strickland, EnerHy Director said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have published a research paper in less that a year since we welcomed our first student cohort. Many congratulations to Soustain on this important milestone and for the best paper award at icSmartGrid 2025! We’re looking forward to seeing it published soon on IEE xplore and celebrating more successes from across the EnerHy research community.”
