New research student film: Optimising the hydrogen supply chain

We continue our Cohort 1 film series with EnerHy CDT researcher Jacob Boden, a PhD student at Loughborough University, whose work is focused on making hydrogen delivery more efficient, cost-effective, and low-carbon.

Hydrogen demand is set to rise by 50% by 2030 – but how do we scale up production and delivery while keeping emissions low? Jacob’s research aims to tackle this challenge.

In collaboration with BOC, Jacob is using real-world data and advanced algorithms to optimise hydrogen supply chains. His work addresses key logistical challenges – from fluctuating production rates to trailer availability – with the goal of reducing costs, improving reliability, and cutting emissions.

By streamlining delivery routes and schedules, Jacob’s work could significantly reduce the carbon footprint of hydrogen transport and save millions in logistics costs. It’s a vital step toward making hydrogen a viable, everyday energy solution.

His research supports the UK’s transition to net zero by helping to build smarter, greener hydrogen infrastructure.
