EnerHy PhD researcher Jubil Thomas recently presented his research on Electrocatalyst development for sustainable aviation fuel production at the Prospects on Protonic Ceramic Cells (PPCC) conference, organised by the International Society for Protonic Ceramic Cells (ISPC2). Held in Nîmes, France, from 23–26 June, the event marked the conference’s 15th anniversary and brought together researchers from around the world working on proton-conducting ceramic cell technologies.
Jubil is a member of EnerHy’s first PhD cohort, which started in October 2024. Based at Cranfield University and sponsored by EDF, he is developing novel electrocatalysts for proton-conducting ceramic cells that could help produce sustainable aviation fuel from carbon dioxide and water.
The PPCC conference covered the latest developments in proton-conducting ceramic cells, including electrolyte compositions, steam and fuel electrodes, modelling, and device performance. These technologies are attracting growing interest for their potential role in clean energy systems, enabling more efficient hydrogen production, carbon dioxide utilisation and low-carbon fuel synthesis.
Jubil was selected from an international community of PhD researchers to present a poster on his work. Reflecting on the experience, Jubil said: “I had a great opportunity to listen to experts within the field of proton conducting cells, which helped me strengthen my understanding of the current research landscape. In addition, talking with other researchers working on electrodes and computational modelling gave me useful insights and alternative approaches which could be applied to my research.”
