Cohort 1 film series continues with research tackling energy poverty in Malawi

We continue our Cohort 1 film series with engineering research student Soustain Chigalu sharing in his own words how his work is addressing one of the most pressing global challenges: energy poverty.

As the world races toward Net Zero, it’s vital we ensure no one is left behind. In Malawi, where only 26% of the population has access to electricity and most rely on firewood for cooking, clean energy innovation is more than a climate solution, it’s a lifeline.

In partnership with Malawian renewable energy services provider INFLO LTD, Soustain’s research, in aims to explore the feasibility of using and deploying battery-electrolysers in Malawi to combat energy poverty.

A solar-powered hybrid system is currently being piloted at a rural hospital in Malawi, providing clean electricity and cooking fuel. This model has the potential to be scaled across sub-Saharan Africa, offering a sustainable and inclusive pathway to energy security.
