We continue our Cohort 1 film series with Loughborough University chemistry PhD researcher Steffi Shaji, who shares how her work is helping unlock the full potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source.
Hydrogen fuel cells require 99.97% purity to operate efficiently – but trace impurities like nitrogen can lead to harmful emissions, reduced energy output, and increased costs.
Steffi’s research, conducted in collaboration with global gas measurement leader EffecTech, focuses on improving how we measure hydrogen purity. By developing reliable reference materials and supporting international standards like ISO 14687 and BSEN 17124, her work ensures accurate gas analysis and safer, more scalable hydrogen solutions.
This research is vital for hydrogen producers, fuel cell manufacturers, and clean energy innovators working to reduce safety risks, cut costs, and boost efficiency – making hydrogen a key player in the global clean energy transition.
